In Response to Comments Related to NPs and PAs Needing to Practice “Under the Guidance” of a Physician

Almost 50 years ago, the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) called for an increase in team-based patient care to improve patient safety (Educating for the Health Team, National Academies Press, 1972). Team-based care is a fundamental requirement when providing care in nursing homes because a single profession is not capable of providing comprehensive, holistic care to meet the complex needs of older adults.
