The association between knee joint muscle activation and knee joint moment patterns during walking in moderate medial compartment knee osteoarthritis: implications for secondary prevention

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) results in greater difficulty walking and climbing stairs than any other medical condition,1 jeopardizing one's ability to maintain physical activity needed for positive health outcomes and increasing the risk of developing additional comorbidities2. This negative impact on health underscores the need to identify modifiable targets that maintain mobility and have potential to slow OA progression processes for secondary prevention. There is no cure for OA and rising rates of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgeries,3 the clinical endpoint for knee OA based on structural progression and worsening symptoms,4 is not sustainable.
