The condition of the contralateral knee may induce different degrees of knee extensor strength asymmetry and affect functionality in individuals with unilateral or bilateral osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative condition that limits joint function by altering muscle activation patterns and decreasing muscular strength [1]. Specifically, up to 30% less quadriceps strength may be registered at the involved side when compared with the contralateral side [2]. This limitation is likely to induce altered movement patterns and affect functionality [3]. However, findings on inter-limb strength asymmetries need to be interpreted with caution. KOA is a continuum of articular degeneration and may progress not only in the affected, but also in the contralateral limb.
