Department chairs want their faculty to experience vitality, thrive, and be promoted. Vitality has been described as “professional fulfillment, motivation, and commitment to ongoing intellectual and personal growth, full professional engagement, enthusiasm, positive feelings of aliveness and energy, and excitement about work.”1 Faculty, in turn, thrive when they are appreciated and supported by leadership, of which promotion is an important result.
