Chorioamnionitis: Are we following diagnostic guidelines?

Chorioamnionitis is an intra-amniotic infection that causes inflammatory changes in the pregnant woman and can be associated with significant neonatal and maternal morbidity. The diagnosis is made through clinical evaluation of multiple signs and symptoms, varying greatly by provider and institution. Recently, a push has been made to narrow diagnostic criteria to reduce unwarranted interventions including overuse of antibiotics, prolonged hospitalization, and separation of mother and infant. A 2015 collaborative workshop with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institute, SMFM, ACOG, and AAP outlined recommended diagnostic criteria for intra-amniotic infection and isolated maternal fever.
