HIV testing after the first antenatal care visit during pregnancy and breastfeeding: Results from the first five quarters in 22 pepfar countries, September 1, 2018 – December 31, 2019

Acquisition of HIV during pregnancy and breastfeeding (BF) is associated with an increased risk of perinatal transmission and accounts for about a third of infant HIV infections in high prevalence areas. Retesting during pregnancy and BF allows for early diagnosis of incident infections, and testing of women missed at first antenatal care visit (ANC1) allows provision of optimal maternal treatment and infant prophylaxis and, if needed, treatment. In October 2018, PEPFAR added a new post-ANC1 disaggregation to its data collection system to monitor and promote increased HIV retesting in PEPFAR-supported programs with high HIV prevalence rates among pregnant and BF women.
