Ectopic Adrenal Cortex in the Adnexa

Ectopic adrenal cortex is a rare entity most commonly detected incidentally at the time of surgery [1]. It is typically identified near the kidney, but can be present anywhere along the genitourinary tract. This occurs due to deposition of adrenal tissue along the path from gonads to the adrenal glands during embryogenesis [2]. This ectopic tissue is found along the path of embryological migration in 50% of newborns and typically atrophies over the first few years of life. It is found in one percent of adults, most commonly men.
