Facial views – Lateral thinking is not required

Having worked in various oral and maxillofacial departments, I have been repeatedly confused and somewhat dismayed by certain radiographic protocols. In particular, the routine use of lateral cephalogram/skull radiographs when patients attend emergency departments with a suspected mid-facial fracture provides some cause for concern. This, to the best of my understanding, is primarily due to the traditional, and arguably outdated, prescription of ‘facial views’ which includes two occipitomental (OM) views at different angles and a lateral cephalogram.
