Gilead pays $97M to settle charity foundation case, claims no wrongdoing

Gilead Sciences Inc. will pay $97 million to settle Justice Department claims that the Peninsula drug maker illegally used a foundation to cover the copays of thousands of Medicare patients taking a hypertension drug. The case is part of an ongoing push by the Justice Department to halt the practice of drugmakers using foundations as conduits that it says circumvent cost-control measures in the Medicare program.
