Acupuncture and East Asian medicine in the USA, putting the profession into perspective

ABSTRACTAcupuncture and East Asian medicine, as a young profession in the US, has faced many challenges. The profession has moved from being considered technician level to an independent professional status. The collaborative efforts of leading organizations such as the NCCAOM in self ‐regulating through setting the standards of competence via a national board exam and delineation of practice standards, which are common practices in the US compared to other countries which have a top‐down decision‐making system, has positively impacted the professions' status in the health care system. Advocacy for the profession would increase the visibility of the profession with a stronger voice, with the goal of full incorporation into the mainstream medical system.
