A mobile health application-based strategy for enhancing adherence to antipsychotic medication in schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a chronic, recurrent severe mental illness associated with high levels of disability, and patients usually have poor functional outcomes (Devaramane, Pai,& Vella, 2011). Most patients with schizophrenia inevitably receive long-term treatment with antipsychotics (King et al., 2014). However, it is very difficult to maintain continuous treatment because of poor medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia (Tarutani et al., 2016). Velligan et al. (2009) indicated that approximately 50% of outpatients with schizophrenia could not adhere to antipsychotic drug treatment.
