Abdominal sepsis patients have a high incidence of chronic critical illness with dismal long-term outcomes
This study used a prospective longitudinal cohort to characterize surgical ICU patients with abdominal sepsis who progress to chronic critical illness (CCI), with prolonged ICU stays and persistent organ dysfunction. While only 6% of patients died early, over 1/3rd of patients progressed to CCI. These CCI patients displayed multiple prolonged biomarker derangements, with dismal 1-year outcomes.
