The Power of the Pilot

A frequent question when leading an evidence-based practice (EBP) initiative is “Should I pilot?” Quite simply, the answer is yes. Logically, once the best evidence has been reviewed and practice recommendations are clear, nurses want to move to implementation. Piloting can seem overwhelming, and a description about the value of piloting in EBP is missing. However, in nursi ng research, piloting is frequently done before a larger study and has many benefits.1 For instance, during a pilot research study, safety and feasibility of an intervention is determined.
