Psychiatric nursing science: Current status and future prospect

The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Future of Nursing (FON) (IOM, 2011) report emphasized the critical role of nursing science in advancing national health goals. Acknowledging the insufficient nurse scientist workforce, Recommendation #5 of the FON was to double the number of nurses with doctoral preparation by 2020 (IOM, 2011, p. 281). The report broadly defined nursing science as the discovery and translation of knowledge that promotes individual and population health through the development of the evidence base for effective practice, the redesign of health care systems, and health outcome evaluation.
