Response to letter to the editor on “Significance of external validation in clinical machine learning: let loose too early?”

We thank Staartjes and Kernbach for their letter “Significance of External Validation in Clinical Machine Learning: Let Loose Too Early?” in response to our manuscript, “Can a machine learning model accurately predict patient resource utilization following lumbar spinal fusion?” [1] We appreciate the opportunity to further discuss the topi c of machine learning (ML) as it pertains to the clinical context of spine surgery and as it relates to our published work.
