Non-obstetric vulvovaginal lacerations: Conservative versus surgical management

Non-obstetric genital trauma is generally uncommon, however it is gradually becoming a more frequent cause of vulvovaginal lacerations. This type of injury is most commonly caused by direct blunt trauma to a highly vascular area which is then crushed against osseous planes [1]. Several mechanisms of injury have been described previously, including “straddle” injuries, accidental penetration, sexual abuse, tearing and laceration during sudden abduction of the lower extremities or due to pelvic fracture, self-mutilation, and burns by hot liquids [1,2].
