CONCLUSIONS: Only few studies have assessed gait characteristics in patients with AS and published data evidence that kinematic parameters of gait is altered, but no consensus exists regarding gait analysis methods for patients with AS. Guidelines are provided to improve the design and methodology for future studies on gait and AS. PMID: 33025884 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between long-term spinal mobility improvements and early disease activity changes or achievement of clinical response criteria in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) treated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) blockers. This retrospective study included 112 patients with AS treated with TNF-α blockers for up to 33 months. The paired t-test was used to compare outcome measures between visits. The correlation between disease activity changes and metrological improvements was analyzed using cumulative probability plots, Spearman correlation coefficien...

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory disease. Recognition of subclinical atherosclerotic vascular changes before clinical manifestation in an asymptomatic population is important for risk stratification and optimal management, which finally leads to the prevention of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to determine the risk of premature subclinical atherosclerosis by evaluating epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) and arterial stiffness parameters in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: We performed a prospective study of 60 consecutive patients meeting...

ConclusionsOur results revealed that the presence of NP component in patients with AS is associated with various disease ‐related variables, including pain, high disease activity, reduced mobility of the axial skeleton, depression and poor quality of life.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), afflicting over 1% of the population, is an inflammatory joint disease leading to cartilage damage and ultimately impaired joint function. Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs are considered as the first-line treatment to inhibit the progression of RA, and the treatment depends on the disease status assessment. The disease activity score 28 as clinical gold standard is extensively used for RA assessment, but it has the limitations of delayed assessment and the need for specialized expertise. It is necessary to discover biomarkers that can precisely monitor disease activity, and provide optimize...

ConclusionsLack of availability of sound scientific knowledge inevitably lead unreliable news to spread over the population, preventing people to disentangle them form reliable information. Even if additional studies are needed to replicate and strengthen our results, these findings represent initial evidence to derive recommendations based on actual data for subjects with autoimmune diseases.

In conclusion, peripheral‑blood hsa_circ_0079787 and the combination of hsa_circ_0079787‑PLT‑MPV‑PCT may provide improved diagnostic accuracy for AxSpA. In addition, the levels of hsa_circ_0079787 in the peripheral blood were correlated with disease activity and severity of AxSpA. PMID: 33000244 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Katsevman GA, Mariscal G, Barrios C, Domenech-Fernández P, Ziembinski C, Bhatia S Abstract Different signaling pathways have been studied in ankylosing spondylitis. New treatment options such as secukinumab could have an important role inhibiting the release of proinflammatory cytokine IL-17. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of secukinumab in ankylosing spondylitis. A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE and EMBASE databases to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assess the role of secukinumab in ankylosing spondylitis. The variables were safety (tota...

This study determined the incidence of IBD in patients with AS using a large scale population-based cohort dataset.MethodsThis was a retrospective cohort study. Patient data were collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 2000 to 2012. We enrolled 3,804 patients with AS and 7,608 non-AS patients. The endpoint was IBD diagnosis by using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) coding 555 and 556 after at least three outpatient visits or one hospital admission, until the end of 2012. The Kaplan–Meier analysis was performed to discriminate...
