A Case of Trunnionosis After Total Hip Arthroplasty
Trunnionosis is a complication after placement of prosthetic devices that composes 2% of revisions of total hip arthroplasty. Metal-on-metal hip replacements include the ball, the stem, and the prosthesis that rests on top of the ball. The trunnion is where the femoral neck attaches to the femoral head. This area can wear, creating trunnionosis; the mechanism is unclear, but theory suggests shearing forces and micromotion within the prosthetic joint cause corrosion products that destroy surrounding tissues.
