A clearer pathway —The future of the gynaecological oncology specialist nurse role

There has been a proliferation of specialist nurse roles throughout developed nations over the past two decades (Castledine, 2002; Duffield, Gardner, Chang, Fry,& Stasa, 2011; Roberts, Floyd,& Thompson, 2011). In Australia, the growth and development of these roles has been largely unregulated by the nursing profession. Specialist nurse roles have emerged from practice as a means of addressing the needs of healthcare organisations and the patients they treat. As Castledine (2002, p. 507) stated, “specialist nurses have developed because patients need them”.
