Radiologists in the Matrix: Serving Multiple Masters in Complex Organizations

The traditional model of a single, pyramid-shaped organizational structure does not suffice in describing the complex institutions in which many contemporary radiologists work. In the academic arena, some of the 179 US medical schools have more than one academic medical center (AMC) and many have complicated relationships between the academic hierarchy and the clinical or hospital side. These diverse organizational structures in turn have a spectrum of short- and long-term impacts upon the professional lives of their radiologists.
