The Timing of Endovascular Revascularization Makes a Difference in Patients Presenting With Gangrene

Critical limb ischemia occurs in 12% of the US adult population. At one year, there is 25% mortality, 30% will have undergone amputation and only 45% will remain alive with both limbs. Amputation is a significant health care burden and therefore the primary goal is limb preservation. There is considerable variability in care of the patient with CLI and therefore the SVS has endorsed the wound, ischemia and foot infection (WIfI) classification to help standardize care and better determine risk of amputation.
