We would like to thank Dr Paraskevas for his comments on our report, “Asymptomatic carotid stenosis is associated with mobility and cognitive dysfunction and heightens falls in older adults.”1 These results extend our earlier findings of cognitive decline observed in asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis that we found were associated with attendant altered blood f low and cerebral hypoperfusion.2 We agree that although intensive medical management in these patients reduces the risk for atheroembolic stroke, it might not necessarily target the mechanisms that contribute to declines in mobility and cognitive function.

(University of Missouri-Columbia) Throughout her 38-year nursing career, Laurel Despins has progressed from a bedside nurse to a clinical nurse specialist and has worked in medical, surgical and cardiac intensive care units. She noticed diabetes is rarely referred to as a primary cause of death in itself, yet the disease is a leading contributor to deaths involving heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Differential roles of Scavenger receptor class B type I: A protective molecule and a facilitator of atherosclerosis (Review). Mol Med Rep. 2020 Jul 28;: Authors: Ma B, Jia J, Wang X, Zhang R, Niu S, Ni L, Di X, Liu C Abstract The scavenger receptor class B type I (SR‑BI) is a multi‑ligand membrane protein receptor that binds to high‑density lipoprotein (HDL) under physiological conditions, promoting the selective uptake of cholesterol esters from HDL into cells. SR‑BI also promotes the reverse transport of excess cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver, contributing to t...

Long non‑coding RNA SNHG16 inhibits the oxygen‑glucose deprivation and reoxygenation‑induced apoptosis in human brain microvascular endothelial cells by regulating miR‑15a‑5p/bcl‑2. Mol Med Rep. 2020 Jul 29;: Authors: Teng H, Li M, Qian L, Yang H, Pang M Abstract MicroRNA (miR) 15a‑5p can promote ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)‑induced apoptosis of cerebral vascular endothelial cells, which is inhibited by long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs). The present study investigated the potential of lncRNAs targeting miR‑15a‑5p to regulate oxygen‑glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD‑R)‑in...

Propofol protects against oxygen/glucose deprivation‑induced cell injury via gap junction inhibition in astrocytes. Mol Med Rep. 2020 Jul 28;: Authors: Fan Y, Zhu S, Wang J, Zhao Y, Wang X Abstract Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide with limited clinical therapies available. The present study isolated primary astrocytes from the brains of rats and treated them with oxygen‑glucose deprivation and re‑oxygenation (OGD/R) to mimic hypoxia/reperfusion (H/R) injury in vitro to investigate stroke. It was revealed that propofol (2,6‑diisopropylphenol), an int...
