Association of Use of the Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Calculator With Reduction in Antibiotic Therapy and Safety: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Use of the neonatal EOS calculator is associated with a substantial reduction in the use of empirical antibiotics for suspected EOS. Available evidence regarding safety of the use of the EOS calculator is limited, but shows no indication of inferiority compared with conventional management strategies.

ConclusionWe show that with the decision process proposed, the physician is able to select the best combined therapy according to different criteria such as maximum efficacy, activity and minimum toxicity. A method for the recommendation of combined antibiotic therapy developed on the basis of a multi-objective optimization model may assist the physicians in the search for alternatives to the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics or restricted antibiotics for empirical therapy.
