A Cross-Sectional Study of Serum Folate and Vitamin B12 Levels in Psychiatric Inpatients. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord. 2019 Oct 10;21(5): Authors: Sagar R, Aggarwal N, Jose N Abstract Objective: To assess the pattern of serum folate and vitamin B₁₂ levels in psychiatric inpatients compared with nonpsychiatric controls. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 psychiatric inpatients diagnosed with psychiatric illness for the first time per ICD-10 criteria and their age-matched caregivers at a super-specialty center in northern India (from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012). Complete blood counts and serum levels of vitamin B₁₂, folate, and homocysteine were measured in all patients and caregivers, who were sharing the same kitchen as that of the patients. Results: Twenty-five percent of the patients were found to have low levels of serum vitamin B₁₂, which was significant compared with healthy controls (P
VITAMIN B12 deficiency symptoms may start to show if a person is lacking in the vitamin, and left untreated, serious complications may occur. Spotting symptoms early can help prevent these complications, and a person ’s hair can hold tell-tale signs.

SinghalAbstractFortification has been universally recommended to control the increasing prevalence of deficiency of vitamin B12. Liquid food systems could be a suitable medium for this fortification. The present work was undertaken to evaluate the effect of pH and storage temperature on the kinetic behavior of vitamin B12 degradation during storage in model aqueous systems at pH 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and two model fruit juices. Vitamin B12 degraded rapidly at pH 2 with half life (t1/2) of 8 days at 37 °C. The maximu...

AbstractIn Western countries, vegetarian diets are associated with lower intakes of energy, saturated fatty acids and animal protein and higher intakes of fibre and phytochemicals, compared to omnivorous diets. Whether the corresponding health benefits in vegetarians outweigh the risks of nutrient deficiencies has not been fully clarified. It should be noted that vegetarians often have a higher socioeconomic status, follow a more health-conscious lifestyle with higher physical activity, and refrain from smoking more often than non-vegetarians. The nutritional needs of growing children and adolescents can generally be met t...
