Purpose of review Giant cell arteritis (GCA) has classically been diagnosed by temporal artery biopsy and treated with high-dose, long-term glucocorticoid therapy. Noninvasive imaging increasingly is employed for diagnostic purposes, but further studies are needed to determine the role of imaging in monitoring longitudinal disease activity. Glucocorticoid-sparing therapy mitigates the numerous adverse effects of glucocorticoids. This review addresses new developments in these areas. Recent findings For diagnosis, when performed at a center with expertise in its use, temporal artery ultrasound has an estimated sensitiv...

The purpose of this study is to state the reliability of neonatal hip ultrasound interpretation, defining the intra and interoperator variability in the evaluation of the scans. We considered a sample of 2071 scans (coming from 798 patients who attended the screening programme for hip dysplasia), which were interpreted by the operator who obtained and read the images at the screening time and then by a different operator who saw the images for the first time. Both the intra and interoperator variability of α and β angles’ values resulted statistically not significative (intraclass correlation coefficient&g...

AbstractDisorders affecting the ulnar nerve in the elbow are common in clinical practice. The diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and electrodiagnostic tests, but imaging examinations are frequently necessary, particularly for the identification of the structures associated with nerve compression. The purpose of this video article is to review the anatomy, the pathology, scanning techniques, and sonographic appearance of the ulnar nerve in the elbow.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review discusses imaging modalities for fracture repair assessment, with an emphasis on pragmatic clinical and translational use, best practices for implementation, and challenges and opportunities for continuing research.Recent FindingsSemiquantitative radiographic union scoring remains the clinical gold standard, but has questionable reliability as a surrogate indicator of structural bone healing, particularly in early-stage, complex, or compromised healing scenarios. Alternatively, computed tomography (CT) scanning enables quantitative assessment of callus morphometry and mechanics through ...

This study evaluated the inactivation effect of ultrasonic treatment combined with acidic electrolyzed water (AEW) on Bacillus cereus spores. AEW treatment reduced the spores by 1.05-1.37 log CFU/mL while the sporicidal effect of ultrasound was minor. More strikingly, simultaneous ultrasonic and AEW treatments for 30 min led to 2.29 log CFU/mL reduction and thus, considered a synergistic effect. Flow cytometry combined with SYTO/PI staining analysis revealed that ultrasound hydrolyzed the cortex while the AEW partially damaged the integrity of the inner membrane. Scanning and transmission electron microscopies were us...

AbstractPurposeTo compare automated breast volumetric scanning (ABVS) with hand-held bilateral whole breast ultrasound (HHUS) prospectively in regards to patient workflow, woman preference, efficacy in lesion detection, and characterization.Materials and methodsSupplemental screening was performed with both ABVS and HHUS to 345 women with dense breasts and negative mammograms. Acquisition and evaluation times were recorded. Lesions were classified according to BIRADS US criteria and compared one to one. Women were recalled for a secondary HHUS examination if ABVS showed any additional lesions. Findings were compared based ...
