Measurement, Meretricious Metrics, and Mishegas

Dear Dr. Jeff: When I started my position as medical director, the only paperwork that I was required to submit was a timesheet. When our facility became part of a chain, a job description was created to include an evaluation of my performance based on facility quality metrics. Then rehospitalization rates and pharmacy budget targets were added as performance measures, followed by medical staff compliance with mandatory in-services, risk management, antibiotic stewardship, and customer satisfaction ratings of medical care.
