kVp, mA, and voxel size effect on 3D voxel-based superimposition.

CONCLUSIONS: Using different CBCT settings can affect the accuracy of the voxel-based superimposition method. This is particularly the case when using low kVp values, while changes in mA or voxel sizes did not significantly interfere with the superimposition outcome. BooneAbstractX-ray Fluorescence Computed Tomography (XFCT) is an emerging imaging technique that provides elemental distribution in objects non-invasively. To predict and optimize the experimental outcome of XFCT, data generated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is usually used. However, MC codes typically require extended computing times to generate sufficient data. In this paper, we report an XFCT simulation method based on analytical computat...

We present a rare case of a major haemorrhage in a 46-year-old patient, 26 days post-vaginoplasty. An urgent computed tomography scan identified a large retrovesical collection, with high-density contents in keeping with recent haemorrhage, containing a 6mm pseudoaneurysm within the right lateral wall. Following resuscitation, the patient was urgently treated with successful embolization of the feeding artery (branch of the prostatic artery), with pushable coils. We highlight the importance of expedient, life-saving management in a rare post-operative complication.

A 29-year-old woman with stage IIBX classic Hodgkin's lymphoma presented with a 5.1  × 7.6-cm (mass to mediastinal ratio 0.34) anterior mediastinal mass and additional involvement of the subcarinal, posterior mediastinal, and right infraclavicular lymph nodes (Fig. 1). The patient was otherwise healthy, a lifelong nonsmoker, and European Cooperative Oncology Group performance s tatus 0. She had a National Comprehensive Cancer Network International Prognostic Score of 1. She received 2 cycles of adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (ABVD), and interim positron emission tomography demonstr...

Conclusions: There is great variation among EPOS and POSNA members with regards to the diagnosis and treatment of UBCs in the humerus. Although some consensus on general treatment principles is seen, specific surgical treatment indications vary. Prospective randomized-controlled studies are needed to evaluate the outcomes of the different surgical approaches compared with nonoperative strategies. Level of Evidence: Level V—expert opinion.

CONCLUSIONS: These data impose a closer follow-up of smokers and pre-neoplastic cases and the utility of the broadspectrum polymerase chain reaction assay in laryngeal dysplastic and cancer lesions. This study may allow to develop biomarkers for early detection or recurrence surveillance, to identify therapeutic targets, and to begin individualization of treatment based on the biology of these tumours. Conclusions: PET-CT tremendously changes treatment plans by expanding the gross tumor volume and including regions which might otherwise have been missed on purely CT-based plans. Of the 50 patients, it changed the contouring and treatment planning of 35 patients and did not impact the remaining 15. Whether this translates into better long-term controls requires further validation by randomized controlled trials, which was not our present objective.

AbstractAll nontechnical factors were analyzed to predict nasal bacterial culture results in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Four hundred and ninety-six CRS patients, who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), were enrolled. Prior to FESS, the severity of each patient ’s CRS was evaluated using a questionnaire, endoscopic examination, acoustic rhinometry, smell test, saccharine transit test, and CT scan. Nasal bacterial cultures were collected from both middle meati using a cotton-tipped stick. Our results showed that the symptom severity complained of by patie nts and their loss of smell f...

As awareness of the habits and risks associated with lung cancer has increased, so has the interest in promoting and improving upon lung cancer screening procedures. Recent research demonstrates the benefits of lung cancer screening; the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) found as its primary result that preventative screening significantly decreases the death rate for patients battling lung cancer. However, it was also noted that the false positive rate was very high (>94%).In this work, we investigated the ability of various machine learning classifiers to accurately predict lung cancer nodule status while also cons...

In this study, a diode-pumped pulse Er:YAG laser (λ = 2940 nm) was employed with continuously sprayed chilled water at the irradiation site. The resulting surface morphology evolved within the laser-machined region of the bone was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray micro-computed tomography. The distinct surface morphology involved cellular/channeled scaffold structure characterized by interconnected pores surrounded by solid ridges, produced within a laser machined region of human structural bone. Underlying physical phenomena responsible for e...
