Incidence of Diagnostic Error in Peripheral Vascular Disease Among Primary Care Physicians

In Canada, vascular surgeons are also vascular specialists, because there does not exist a corresponding medical specialist who manages vascular disease. They are responsible for the diagnosis, medical, surgical and endovascular management of peripheral vascular disease. With an aging population, this places a large burden on the vascular surgeon. It is postulated that many referrals sent to the vascular surgeon are a misdiagnosis from the referring physician. As such, this report sets out to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of primary care physicians when diagnosing peripheral vascular disease.
