UV–Vis absorption and fluorescence properties of these polymers have been investigated. The fluorescence spectra of these polymers showed only the bands ascribed to the benzothiadiazole units even when the bithiophene units were irradiated. For these polymers, photoenergy transfer occurs from donor to acceptor. DFT calculations were performed to understand the photophysical properties of the polymers.Graphical abstract
