The Pregnant Surgeon

Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1693012The proportion of women entering medicine and surgery is increasing steadily. As more women surgeons have children during residency and practice, it is essential that we adopt a team approach to the pregnant surgeon, as a pregnancy undoubtedly impacts the team and not just the individual. Coauthored by a practicing surgeon mother of 2 (J. D.) and a postgraduate year 8 colorectal surgery fellow mother of 2 who is currently pregnant (C. H.), we aim to review the data while providing some practical advice for pregnant surgeons and those considering pregnancy, as well as their valued colleagues, mentors, and administrators. Physical challenges are discussed by trimester, as are the risks facing the pregnant surgeon, the logistics of transitioning in and out of maternity leave, and postpartum considerations. ConclusionsOverall health status is found to be poor among women during the perinatal period compared with the postpartum period. The study indicates that interventions to address the influencing factors are needed to ensure better quality of life for women both pre- and post-birth. Community-based initiatives, such as awareness building, might address negative factors and subsequently improve health status and reduce adverse health outcomes related to pregnancy and postnatal care.

TNF inhibitors still represent the first biologic after conventional synthetic DMARD (csDMARD) in the majority of patients according to registry data. This was p...

In this study, AT1-AAs were detected in the sera of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and the positive rate was 44.44% vs. 17.46% in non-PAD volunteers. In addition, analysis showed that AT1-AAs level was positively correlated with PAD. To reveal the causal relationship between AT1-AAs and vascular aging, an AT1-AAs-positive rat model was established by active immunization. The carotid pulse wave velocity was higher, and the aortic endothelium-dependent vasodilatation was attenuated significantly in the immunized rats. Morphological staining showed thickening of the aortic wall. Histological examination showe...

Gupta, Nikee Awasthee, Vipin Rai, Srinivas Chava, Venugopal Gunda, Kishore B. ChallagundlaAbstractThe regulation of the pleiotropic transcription factor, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) by miRNAs and proteins is extensively studied. More recently, the NF-κB signaling was also reported to be regulated by several long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that constitute the major portion of the noncoding component of the human genome. The common NF-κB associated lncRNAs include NKILA, H...

Celebrating the discovery of your unborn baby ’s sex has been coopted by people with repressive, polarised ideas, says the woman who began the trendIn 2008, Jenna Myers Karvunidis was pregnant and itching to throw a party. “Life is hard, but I like to have fun,” she explains. “I think it’s important to mark moments of joy.” Karvunidis (who loves celebrating so much that she baked a cake for her goldfish’s birthday) was determined to get her family “jazzed up” about her first baby. Gaber, Khalda AmrAbstractBackgroundLeptin is an important hormone during implantation processes and plays a pivotal role in regulating the development of placenta and endo-metrial receptivity. miRNAs are associated with endometrial diseases, preeclampsia, neural tube defects and infertility, providing their potential role in the function of normal reproductive system. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of miRNA-27a and leptin polymorphisms in the development of idiopathic recurrent pregnancy ...

Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong forum, but I'm wondering if y'all had any advice. I don't have time in med school to be in a relationship, and I honestly haven't found anyone I want to be in a relationship with thus far. On the other hand, hooking up scares the hell out of me. Condoms don't adequately protect from HPV or HSV, and getting someone pregnant from a broken condom would financially ruin me. There would be no way for me to pay child support and also financially support... Sex Drive is Getting in the Way of Studying
