Locking plate fixation versus antegrade intramedullary nailing for the treatment of extra-articular distal femoral fractures

Less than 1% of all reported fractures are distal femur fractures; however, distal femur fractures account for 3% –6% of all femoral fractures [1]. There is a bimodal distribution of the incidence of distal femur fractures with age [2]. These fractures often occur in young adults after high energy trauma and in older adults following low energy trauma. Epidemiologic studies have confirmed these injury pattern s, showing peaks in incidence in elderly women and in young males [2,3].
