Sleep Duration and Cognition in a Nationally Representative Sample of U.S. Older Adults

A growing body of literature has highlighted the critical role sleep plays in the cognitive and general health in older adults.1,2 While there are numerous metrics of sleep quality and quantity, sleep duration is of particular interest given its conceptual accessibility to community-dwelling older adults and the relative ease with which it can be queried in large epidemiologic samples. The recommended sleep duration for adults aged 65 years and older, per National Sleep Foundation guidelines, is 7 to 8 hours per night.
