When Cancer Comes Home

Yesterday was National Cancer Day. Now who thought of that? We have President’s Day, Memorial Day and Martin Luther King Day. It makes sense to honor heroes and leaders, but a whole day to acknowledge the enemy? That is just plain ridiculous! There is no greater enemy to the United States than cancer. It claims more American lives than any war and shakes millions of American homes to the core every year. Cancer consumes billions of American health-care dollars, it uses up valuable resources and it steals our peace. The day is meant by promoters to raise awareness and debunk cancer myths but that is something we should be doing every day until cancer is completely obliterated from the human race. No one invites cancer into their home. Cancer just barges in and takes over. It takes up as much room as it can get and it pushes tradition, family fun and peace out of the way. Cancer has a way of changing things in our home and the way we live. It takes over our conversations, it manages our time as we plan our lives around treatment, and it capitalizes our thoughts as we wonder what it will do to us. Cancer is the enemy that occupies our lives. The best thing we can do with an enemy is to learn from it. I don’t mean we learn how to become like our enemy. We learn how to live better and appreciate the lives we have built. We can learn how to take better care of ourselves. We can discover our passions and learn how to make our relationships stronger.
