Multiple Sclerosis and Meditation

“You don’t have to be a Buddha-on-the-mountain-top-vegan-hippy-nutball”… Quite possibly the best line I’ve ever been given when interviewing a person with MS. That answer was given by my pal, Suzanne Stephens, in an article we wrote about yoga and MS. It could, however, be used about a number of alternative therapies for our disease. One such alternative can be part of a yoga practice: meditation. At its simplest, meditation can be a simple awareness of our breath. At its most complex, meditation can be part of a religious experience. The simple act of a morning inventory can be a meditation. In a recent posting, Suzanne podcasted as simple, 8-minute, guided imagery meditation that I find most useful. I’ll not purport to be an expert of any kind when it comes to meditation (or for effectively “clearing the mind” very often, even). I will say that when I find myself in my most difficult (and often self-inflicted) states, I find that I have “lost” my breath and a simple moment or two, coupled with some deep breathing, brings me back to a calmer place. This topic is one which was requested (I think it was by our Aussie pal, Rusty) in last month’s “How’s Your MS Today?” blog. There were several good topics suggested in the comments of that post so we hope to get to some of them in the coming months. What are your experiences, thoughts, perceptions (and maybe misconceptions) of meditation and how it might fit into your life with MS? Wishing you...
