Fewer Black Men Adopt Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer

FRIDAY, June 7, 2019 -- Overall rates of active surveillance are up for all men with low-risk prostate cancer, although the increase is significantly smaller for black men, according to a research letter published in the May 23 issue of the New...

In this study, we found the AgNPs effectively induces cytotoxicity, ROS and apoptosis by modulation of intrinsic apoptoic Bcl2, Bclxl, Bax and Caspase 3 protein expressions in LNCap cell lines. Based on the study, synthesis of AgNPs from S. miltiorrhiza shows eco-friendly and it exhibits antimicrobial and anticarcinogenic effects. PMID: 31299869 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Steinestel J, Luedeke M, Arndt A, Schnoeller TJ, Lennerz JK, Wurm C, Maier C, Cronauer MV, Steinestel K, Schrader AJ Abstract Molecular modifications of the androgen receptor (AR) can cause resistance to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in prostate cancer patients. Since lack of representative tumor samples hinders therapy adjustments according to emerging AR-modifications, we evaluated simultaneous detection of the two most common AR modifications (AR-V7 splice variant and AR point mutations) in circulating tumor cells (CTCs). We devised a single-tube assay to detect AR-V7 splice variants and AR point m...

Authors: Yang X, Guo Y, Guo Z, Si T, Xing W, Yu W, Wang Y Abstract Cryoablation is moderately effective against prostate cancer. Of note, the off-target or enlarged therapeutic effect after cryoablation is reported in routine clinical practice. To uncover it, we constructed a bilateral inguinal transplantation model of prostate cancer. All the mice were randomly subdivided into three groups: Group A (Control group), Group B (Surgery group), and Group C (Cryoablation group). All the procedures in three groups were conducted only for tumors in the target region (right groin). The tumors in untargeted region (left gro...

Authors: van den Wyngaert T, Tombal B Abstract Radium-223 is a life prolonging treatment in symptomatic men with metastatic castrate resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and bone metastases, but no visceral disease, regardless of prior treatment with docetaxel. Together with four other drugs (i.e. abiraterone, cabazitaxel, docetaxel, enzalutamide), it has been available for clinical use since 2013 and has been shown to also provide benefits in quality-of-life and societal benefits. However, in 2018 the European Medicines Agency (EMA) ruled to restrict the use of radium-223 to a more advanced disease setting after at l...

Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that miR-216a-5p might serve as a tumor suppressor in ESCC cells through negatively regulating TCTN1 expression, indicating the possibility that miR-216a-5p and TCTN1 might be attractive targets for ESCC therapeutic intervention. In this study, We found a lncRNA SNHG7 was overexpressed in PCa cell lines and tissues. LncRNA SNHG7 promotes prostate cancer migration and invasion by modulating EMT. Further study indicated that lncRNA SNHG7 acts as a sponge for miRNA-324-3p and positively regulates WNT2B by a sponge effect. Moreover, We confirmed that WNT2B, an important protein in the Wnt signal pathway, promotes the malignant phenotype of PCa cells and mediated the biological effects exerted by lncRNA SNHG7. Overall, our study suggested that lncRNA SNHG7 could promote PCa EMT via miR-324-3p and WNT2B in vitro. The lncRNA SNHG7/miR-324-3p /WNT2B axis r...

In the eighth edition AJCC staging, all organ-confined disease is assigned pathologic stage T2, without subclassification. We investigated whether total tumor volume (TTV) and/or maximum tumor diameter (MTD) of the index lesion are useful in improving prediction of biochemical recurrence (BCR) in pT2 patients. We identified 1657 patients with digital tumor maps and quantification of TTV/MTD who had pT2 disease on radical prostatectomy (RP). Multivariable Cox regression models were used to assess whether TTV and/or MTD are independent predictors of BCR when adjusting for a base model incorporating age, preoperative prostate...

Authors: Konishi Y, Terada T, Araki Y, Kawaguchi O Abstract Flutamide, a chemotherapeutic agent for prostate cancer, is known to enhance warfarin anticoagulation. However, not much is known about its pharmaceutical interaction. We herein report the case of a patient with an implanted pacemaker for atrial fibrillation with bradycardia who was on warfarin. This patient presented with deterioration of hematuria, gingival, ear, and subcutaneous bleeding. The prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR) was extremely elevated after starting flutamide to treat progression of prostate cancer. Fatal bleeding co...
