The Use of Racial and Ethnic Terms

To the Editor We wish to make some comments on the excellent article by Darrach et al. Specifically, we want to state our point of view regarding scientific accuracy when using terms such as race, ethnicity, and Latin American race. The termsrace andethnicity are used interchangeably in the article; however, anthropological publications consistently describe race as being biological and referring to the physical characteristics of a person, while ethnicity is a construct in social science that describes a person ’s cultural identity.
