Giant breast masses: A pictorial essay

SummaryIn this pictorial essay, we showcase the imaging and pathological findings of a variety of giant breast lesions. Some lesions such as lipomas and hamartomas contain fibrous, glandular and lipomatous tissues and can have characteristic mammographic appearances. Other lesions (e.g. simple cysts, fibroepithelial lesions and some malignancies) may be mammographically indistinguishable and ultrasound (US) may be helpful in further characterisation, for example, by demonstrating posterior enhancement with simple cysts, cystic and solid components in papillary lesions, internal septations on haematomas and abscesses, solid homogeneity or heterogeneity in fibroepithelial lesions and increased vascularity in neoplastic, inflammatory or infective lesions. A diagnostic needle biopsy may be performed in some cases; however, with larger and heterogeneous lesions, there is an increased possibility of diagnostic inaccuracy due to limited sampling, such that full excision of the lesion may be advisable to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Parosteal lipomas are extremely rare. These tumors grow slowly and as they grow, they can compress a nearby nerve producing sensory and motor disturbances. Till date less than 50 cases of PIN entrapment due to parosteal lipoma have been reported in literature. However, to the bes...

s Antje Garten Germline mutations in the tumor suppressor gene PTEN cause PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS). Pediatric patients with PHTS frequently develop lipomas. Treatment attempts with the mTORC1 inhibitor rapamycin were unable to reverse lipoma growth. Recently, lipomas associated with PIK3CA-related overgrowth syndrome were successfully treated with the novel PI3K inhibitor alpelisib. Here, we tested whether alpelisib has growth-restrictive effects and induces cell death in lipoma cells. We used PTEN-haploinsufficient lipoma cells from three patients and treated them with alpelisib alone or in combination w...

CONCLUSIONS: Patients presenting with posterior neck masses can be reassured of a low risk of malignancy. The majority of posterior neck masses can be appropriately evaluated via physical examination and ultrasound. PMID: 31608686 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The patient underwent thoracoscopic resection of the mass which revealed a myxoid spindle cell lipoma. This is an exceedingly rare location for this tumor biology and here we discuss its pathological features and treatment options.

Although spindle cell lipomas and pleomorphic lipomas were originally considered different entities, the recent WHO classification defines them as spindle cell/pleomorphic lipoma (SCL...

Conclusions: To date only few AD cases presenting either missense or truncating DNA2 variants have been reported. None of them presented with a cardiac involvement or rhabdomyolysis. Here we enlarge the genetic and phenotypic spectrum of DNA2-related mitochondrial disorders.

ConclusionsThere is a significant relationship between a radiomics signature, consisting of a combination of quantitative MRI features, and the MDM2-amplification status. Although further optimization and validation is needed for the transition to clinical practice, radiomics has appeared to be a promising, non-invasive approach for the classification of WDLPS and lipomas.AcknowledgementM.Vos and M.P.A.
