Pediatric Hospital Medicine Board Certification: A Solution, but to Which Problem?

In 1996, 2 internists named Wachter and Goldman published a position paper in which they first used the term hospitalist.1 The fact that the authors employed quotation marks around the term underscored how new it was to most readers. The authors offered the vague definition of hospitalists as “specialists in inpatient medicine” while focusing almost exclusively on providers for adult patients. In pediatrics, hospitalist programs began to develop somewhat more slowly, but they steadily followed the adult trajectory.
