Children and young people
This update looks at trends in the quality of care for children and young people. It highlights the increase in childhood obesity, the stalling in rates of infant mortality, and an increase in hospital admissions as a result of self-harm. However, there have been some promising improvements including a reduction in smoking among young people and a decrease in teenage pregnancy.
Does it make sense, medically or ethically, when fertility clinics refuse to treat prospective mothers they consider too large?
Clinical practice guidelines recommend women avoid pregnancy immediately after bariatric surgery, highlighting the need for effective contraception. However, women with a history of malabsorptive bariatric procedures should generally not use oral contraceptives, as these procedures may decrease contraceptive effectiveness.
Conclusions:Modeling neck circumference while allowing for differences by Mallampati class showed a nearly threefold increase in the risk of SDB with increasing neck circumference in women with Mallampati class 1. Other potential sites of airway obstruction need to be investigated in future research.Citation:Bourjeily G, Chambers A, Salameh M, Bublitz MH, Kaur A, Coppa A, Risica P, Lambert-Messerlian G. Meta-analysis of 79 studies found maternal pre-pregnancy obesity was significantly linked to child obesity (OR 3.64, 95% CI 2.68 –4.95; n = 88,872), child overweight/obesity combined (2.69, 2.10–3.46; n =181,800), and child overweight (OR 1.80, 1.25–2.59; n = 53,238).
(Estonian Research Council) About 15% of couples in fertile age have experienced fertility problems. Men contribute to 50% of the cases when a couple cannot achieve the desired pregnancy. The proportion of overweight men has tripled in parallel with the increase in fertility problems worldwide. The doctoral thesis conducted at the University of Tartu Institute of Clinical Medicine confirmed that central obesity affects fertility parameters negatively. To alleviate their fertility problems, men should pay attention to their lifestyle.
This study evaluated the associations between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and overweight in childhood. METHODS: A total of 30,127 (age 7) and 24,934 (age 11) children in the Danish National Birth Cohort born during 1996 to 2002 were studied. Mothers reported acetaminophen use in telephone interviews conducted during pregnancy, and children's BMI and waist circumference were reported by parents at 7 and 11 years. Differences for BMI z score and waist circumference were estimated, as well as risk ratios for overweight in girls and boys adjusting for indications of use and other confounders. RESULTS: There were ...
This study examined associations of neonatal adipocytokines with longitudinal childhood adiposity measures in a prospective cohort of pregnant women and their children. METHODS: Leptin and adiponectin concentrations at delivery and children's BMI z scores between age 4 weeks and 8 years were measured. Differences in BMI z scores and rates of BMI z score change by leptin (n = 257) and adiponectin (n = 271) terciles were estimated. RESULTS: Children in the middle (mean difference: 0.2; 95% CI: -0.1 to 0.4) and highest (0.4; 95% CI: 0.1 to 0.6) leptin terciles had greater BMI z scores tha...
Breast-fed milk may nourish a baby ’s microbiome in ways that bottled breast milk can’t.
(Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center) In the first study of its kind, LSU Health New Orleans researchers report that women's pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity produces changes in breast milk, which can affect infant growth.
