Editorial: Peer review deliberations

The first peer reviewed collection of medical articles was published in 1731, but the subsequent development of peer review has been gradual and, in the case of some journals, the practice was only adopted relatively recently (e.g. The Lancet introduced peer review in 1976).1 Our journal, Women and Birth, has used peer review since its inception in 2005, with an ongoing focus on raising the standards of the papers submitted2 and published. Peer review is now accepted as one of the gold standards of scientific publication.
