CONCLUSIONS &IMPLICATIONS: Findings suggest that impairments in a critical pragmatic skill-the ability to repair communication breakdown-show significant change with age across three neurodevelopmental disabilities, with important sex-specific patterns. These developments were often observed in spite of a relative plateau in cognitive and language growth, suggesting that repair skills may be more malleable and therefore an excellent target for intervention. Findings not only inform the nature of pragmatic impairment across groups but also can importantly inform clinical practice, suggesting that clinicians should monit...

(CNN) — Natalie Dedreux has spent months campaigning against a plan to make a blood test for Down syndrome free in Germany. While its proponents say the prenatal test is a safer alternative to current procedures and should be available to everyone, Dedreux believes it will lead to people like her being “sorted out.” Dedreux, a 20-year aspiring journalist from Cologne, has the condition. “I am worried that if pregnant women find out their baby has Down syndrome, they will decide against us …. because they are scared,” she wrote on her blog. She has attended protests against the plan and ...

AbstractThe Parenting Stress Index (PSI) has been translated into multiple languages. The aim of the present study was to develop a Polish version of the PSI III. A total sample size of 678 parents (308 parents of children with ASD, 59 parents of children with Down syndrome, 65 parents of deaf children, 34 parents of children with other developmental disorders, and 212 parents without developmental disabilities) participated in the study. The Polish version of the PSI III was characterized by: (1) good internal consistency, (2) a three-factor structure, including Parent domain, Child domain, and the children ’s and p...

Ts65Dn display lower heart rate and blood pressure at 6 and 12  months compared to WT. High frequency power spectra of heart rate is lower in Ts65Dn, suggesting autonomic differences between strains. Pulse wave velocity is similar across groups. Overall, Ts65Dn have a cardiovascular profile comparable to that observed in Down syndrome. These findings support f urther use of Ts65Dn to investigate mechanistic underpinnings of the unique cardiovascular profile in Down syndrome. AbstractDown syndrome (Ds) is the most common chromosomal cause of intellectual disability that results from triplication of chromosome 21 genes....

Abstract Translocations are the most common type of structural chromosomal abnormalities. Unbalanced translocations are usually found in children who present with congenital abnormalities, developmental delay, or intellectual disability. Balanced translocations are usually found in adults who frequently present with reproductive failure; either subfertility, or recurrent pregnancy loss. Herein, we report the spectrum and frequency of translocations in a Sri Lankan cohort. A database of patients undergoing cytogenetic testing was maintained prospectively from January 2007 to December 2016 and analyzed, retrospectiv...

Conclusion Children with DS used TEG significantly more than children with ASD in this sample. Identifying strengths and weaknesses in TEG use is important because providing caregiver training to facilitate TEG can result in increased opportunities to respond with language models and promote language development. Conclusions and implicationsThe psycholinguistic pattern of young adults with DS is not homogeneous with respect to auditory and visual processing. The profile of specific deficits suggests that the educative support for young adults with DS may need to be specific.

CONCLUSION: Parents can identify the difficulties of their children when they are younger and offer more assistance, but this does not happen when the children are of elementary school age. This suggests that they need professional support that is not restricted to the guidelines and the schools. PMID: 31450519 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusions: Up to now no survey has been carried out in Hungary with the aim of objectively revealing the dental care needs of these patients. Internationally, however, several surveys have been published. It can be stated on the basis of these that both caries frequency and the presence of parodontal diseases increase in correlation with age and the level of disability. Oral hygiene is insufficient, patients or their caretakers do not get proper information, only a few of them receive adequate training and they are not motivated to keep up oral health. Dental care, except for tending acute cases, is not satisfactory. For...
