Middle-of-the-night insomnia in surgery rotation

Anyone else have a problem with this when stressed? It's not a problem usually but I'm in my surgery rotation and it's killing me. I have to wake up at 4:45 anyway, but I always wake up between 2-3am and can't go back to sleep. When I wake up, I still feel tired but just start thinking about all the crap I have to do all day and can't fall back to sleep. I try going to bed earlier at 9 instead of 10 but then I just wake up an hour earlier lol. Like I said in the title, it's a middle-of-the-night problem only. I can fall asleep instantly whenever. I also cut out napping during the day but hasn't helped. I'm stuck in this 5-5.5 hour sleep habit and I always wake up regardless of how tired I feel and then feel tired throughout the day. I haven't tried any sleep meds, like diphenhydramine, since I don't have trouble falling sleep but rather maintaining sleep. I'm afraid if I took it at 3am then it'd just make me groggy all day. Plus, honestly, the school-related thoughts in my head have always been able to overcome the drowsy effect from sedating meds in the past. Anyone with this problem have any successful methods to get a few more hours of sleep? Generally stress prevents ppl from falling asleep, but it's having the opposite effect on me haha. I've had this problem before and my sleep wake cycle always returns to normal after I return to normal 8-5 work hours. I just need a quick fix for this surgery rotation. Thanks!
