Reliability testing of a modified MISTELS score using a low-cost trainer box

Training programs such as the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery (FLS) that are based on simulation are being currently used in several western countries. FLS allows skill acquisition and evaluation of compe...

ConclusionGiven the increasing number of such surgeries performed the recognition of acute and chronic complications, and their optimal management is of great importance. Although performing a Roux-en-Y fistulojejunostomy was recommended in the literature, conservative and endoscopic treatment should be considered before.

ConclusionLaparoscopic contained bag morcellation for myomas and uterus with large myomas were evaluated. In myomectomy group both conventional and in bag laparoscopic morcellation were comparable in terms of duration of the surgery and blood loss. When all cases ( hysterectomy and myomectomy combined together) and cases of hysterectomy with large fibroid were studied, laparoscopic in bag morcellation took less operative time and there was statistically significant difference in operative time . No case of leiomyosarcoma was found in our study of 720 cases of myomas or uterus with large myomas.

ConclusionsIntraoperative events and 1-year postoperative complications were high for both Lichtenstein –Lichtenstein and Laparoscopy–Laparoscopy, and the results therefore support guidelines that recommend another approach at reoperation.

AbstractBackgroundRetroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy is gaining traction as a minimally invasive technique. One of the purported relative contraindications is BMI given the smaller working space. We hypothesize that other anthropometric measurements may be better predictors of operative time.MethodsAn IRB-approved, single-institution, retrospective study of 83 patients who underwent laparoscopic retroperitoneal adrenalectomy evaluated the association of anthropometric measurements taken from cross-sectional imaging and the primary outcome of operative time. Descriptive statistics were performed with Wilcoxon rank-s...

AbstractBackgroundTo date, there has been no consensus concerning the vascular approach during sigmoid colectomy for diverticular disease. The aim of this study was to determine the functional impact of elective laparoscopic sigmoidectomy performed with high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery for diverticulitis in consecutive male patients.MethodsTwenty-five consecutive patients of median age 53  years were enrolled in a prospective single-centre pilot study at a tertiary teaching hospital. Main outcome measures were functional results. Patients were asked to complete standardized, validated questionnaires to ...

ConclusionsVI could be a safe and effective alternative to a diverting stoma. Although currently, VI is not widely used, it could have a widespread application in laparoscopic surgery. However, definitive trials are needed before firm recommendations on the use of VI can be made.

AbstractBackgroundLaparoscopic splenectomy and azygoportal disconnection (LSD) is widely used for the treatment of esophagogastric variceal haemorrhage and hypersplenism owing to cirrhotic portal hypertension. However, whether LSD improves liver synthesis function and cirrhosis remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of LSD on liver synthesis function and cirrhosis based on a prospective 2-year follow-up study.MethodsA total of 118 patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension who underwent LSD were included in this study. We analysed clinical data including routine blood parameters, liver functio...

AbstractBackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate whether elderly patients undergoing elective hepatectomy experience increased morbidity/mortality and whether these outcomes could be mitigated by minimally invasive hepatectomy (MIH).Methods15,612 patients from 2014 to 2017 were identified in the Hepatectomy Targeted Procedure Participant Use File of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to examine the effect of elderly status (age  ≥ 75 years,N = 1769) on outcomes with a subgroup an...
