Transgender Medicine: Best Practices and Clinical Care for the Future

There has been growing interest in the field of transgender medicine over the past 15 years. PubMed keyword text searches for “transgender” or the antiquated term “transsexual” yielded less than 50 entries prior to 2004. However, since 2005, there has been a steady increase in publications, which reached over 1000 publications per year in 2018. This growth and interest in the field have been largely due to increase d awareness of the medical needs of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGGNC) people not only by the lay public but also by the medical community.
