Authors: Umemoto G, Furuya H Abstract Various methods of rehabilitation for dysphagia have been suggested through the experience of treating stroke patients. Although most of these patients recover their swallowing function in a short period, dysphagia in Parkinson's disease (PD) and Parkinson-related disorder (PRD) degenerates with disease progression. Muscle rigidity and bradykinesia are recognized as causes of swallowing dysfunction, and it is difficult to easily apply the strategies for stroke to the rehabilitation of dysphagia in PD patients. Disease severity, weight loss, drooling, and dementia are important ...

We describe in this case report one month old baby admitted to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with severe pertussis pneumonia. The baby was deteriorating despite being on supportive management including High Frequency Oscillator ventilation (HFOV). However, she showed dramatic improvement after exchange blood transfusion (ET) and was discharged home. We hope that this report will add to the previously published experiences in management of severe pertussis. It will also alert general physicians about pertussis pneumonia and the importance of early referral and abrupt management for a better prognosis. PMID: 30992740 [PubMed]

Anogenital skin care for elderly remains an umbrella term concerning protective and non-interventional regimens, particularly for ordinary diaper users. Diapers provide an anxiety relief for excretion, but instead raise a prevalence of genital candidiasis. Our recent investigation has demonstrated the favorable preventive effect of topical washing with miconazole nitrate-containing soap to diaper candidiasis. We extended this work to the therapeutic benefit of the antifungal soap in substantial cases with genital candidiasis, who had at least 1 additional risk factor including diarrhea, cerebrovascular diseases, dementia, ...

ConclusionOptimal management and correction of subglottic stenosis is possible via laryngotracheal reconstruction with cartilage graft. The reconstruction procedure, first utilized in the 1970’s, allows correction of severe (grades III and IV) subglottic stenosis. After healing is complete, the patient regains function of her own airway.

ConclusionsThis case demonstrates that pulmonary valve endocarditis can present atypically with recurrent respiratory symptoms, and in such cases, echocardiography should be considered to investigate for right-sided infective endocarditis. In addition, despite correct treatment, with normalization of inflammatory markers and improvement in vegetation size, infective endocarditis can continue to cause systemic symptoms. Finally, clinicians should consider chest computed tomography routinely as part of right-sided infective endocarditis follow-up.

In this study, we evaluated the in vitro effects of five antimicrobials against biofilms formed by Klebsiella pneumoniae in ETTs. K. pneumoniae was added to minimal mucin medium prior to inoculation in microtiter plates containing ETT fragments. Biofilm susceptibility was assessed by crystal violet staining. At 24 h, the antimicrobials significantly reduced biofilm formation. At 48 h, all of the antimicrobial agents exhibited significant reductions in biofilm formation, even at concentrations above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Tigecycline and fosfomycin showed the greatest inhibition capacity, ...
