Satisfying symmetry: uncovering functional insights from patterns in membrane protein structures

NIH Director's Seminar Series Proteins that are integral to the cellular membrane constitute around a third of the genome in any given organism. However, understanding of the mechanisms by which they function on the molecular level has lagged behind those of other macromolecules due to severe experimental challenges. Dr. Forre st will discuss computational strategies that have proved effective for predicting membrane protein structure and function, including uncovering an elegant role for symmetry in proteins responsible for solute transport across membranes.Air date: 4/5/2019 12:00:00 PM
