Publication date: December 2019Source: Molecular Immunology, Volume 116Author(s): Mahya Ranjbar, Bahador Behrouz, Fatemeh Norouzi, Seyed Latif Mousavi GargariAbstractPseudomonas aeruginosa is a common nosocomial pathogen in burn patients, and rapidly acquires antibiotic resistance; thus, developing an effective therapeutic approach is the most promising strategy for combating infection. Type III secretion system (T3SS) translocates bacterial toxins into the cytosol of the targeted eukaryotic cells, which plays important roles in the virulence of P. aeruginosa infections in both acute pneumonia and burn wound models. The Pc...

To overcome this challenge, an antimicrobial levofloxacin(LF)was conjugated onto hyaluronic acid (HA) moieties via an o-phenylenediamine linker to prepare a NO-sensitive nanosystem (HA-NO-LF) in this study. The HA-NO-LF nanomicelles could enter host cells v...

Once considered a safer alternative to cigarettes, radiologists are now drawing connections between vaping and lung injury patterns, according to a  studypublished this month in theAmerican Journal of Roentgenology. This isn ’t the first time that radiologists are voicing concerns about the adverse effects of e-cigarettes. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studypublished in August showed that a single session of vaping causes reduced blood flow and damaged vascular reactivity in the femoral artery. The researchers also found that the vaping solution consists of potentially harmful chemicals that when ...

Authors: Schöll N, Rohde GGU Abstract Pneumonia belongs to the most frequent and most deadly infectious diseases worldwide. It represents an increasing problem for the aging population. The incidence and mortality rises with every decade. The clinical presentation of pneumonia differs between elderly and younger patients. Multiple factors including functional status (self-dependency and immobilization), comorbidities, immunosenescence, nutritional status, swallowing disorders have to be accounted for. Pneumonia in the elderly has to be differentiated from nursing home acquired pneumonia. Diagnosis of pneumonia...

In this review, we report the available data regarding efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics of colistin in the treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in neonates and infants. Seventeen clinical studies, involving 312 patients, and 3 pharmacokinetics studies were identified. Blood stream infection was the most common source of infection, followed by pneumonia and meningitis/ventriculitis. In most cases, colistin was administered in association with other antibiotics. The most common route of administration was intravenous, with colistimethate doses ranging from 25,000 to 225,000 IU/kg/day divided into 2 or...

Publication date: 5 February 2020Source: Journal of Molecular Structure, Volume 1201Author(s): Rasha A. Azzam, Galal H. Elgemeie, Rokia R. OsmanAbstractThe synthesis of novel pyrido[2,1-b]benzothiazole and pyrido[2,1-b]benzoimidazole derivatives was achieved via the reaction of N-aryl-2-cyano-3,3-bis(methylthio)acrylamide with benzothiazoleylacetonitrile and benzoimidazoleylacetonitrile, respectively, while N-substituted 2-pyridylbenzothiazole derivatives were synthesized by reacting 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(dimethylamino)acrylonitrile with either cyanoacetamide, aryl cyanoacetamides or 2-cyano-N’-(4-substituted b...
