Fostering Cultural Competence in Nursing Students Through International Service Immersion Experiences

ABSTRACT: Using an ethnographical case study method, faculty members examined senior nursing students' experiences and learning during a cultural immersion service-learning trip in Haiti. Pediatric care was emphasized, as well as cultural awareness and competency. Following thematic analysis, students' guided reflections revealed common themes: knowledge and skills, culture, healthcare, and challenges and opportunities. Students also reported improved cultural understanding and self-perception.
