Comparison of Bone Healing in Open-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy between the Use of Allograft Bone Chips with Autologous Bone Marrow and the Use of Allograft Bone Chips Alone for Gap Filling

This study analyzed 36 patients who underwent HTO with locking plate (mean age: 58.0 years). Allograft bone chips mixed with autologous BM aspirated from anterior superior iliac spine were used in 19 patients (group A) and allograft chips only were used in 17 patients (group B). The radiological and clinical results between two groups were compared during examination at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery. Clinical evaluations involving the Hospital for Special Surgery score, Knee Society knee score, and function score were performed at each assessment point. The osteotomy filling and osteoconductivity using the modified van Hemert's score were compared in each period. The clinical results were not different between the groups at all assessment points. Osteotomy filling was higher at 6 weeks and 3 months in group A than in group B (p = 0.004 and 0.005, respectively). Osteoconductivity was higher at 6 weeks and 3 months in the most medial ¼ zone in group A than in group B (p = 0.025 and 0.031, respectively). Our data shows it is beneficial to mix the allograft bone chips mixed with autologous BM after open-wedge HTO. BoopalanAbstractDistal Fibula Giant cell tumour (GCT) is a rare condition. The described methods of treatment for distal fibula GCT include excision of tumour and ankle arthrodesis, replacement of distal fibula with ipsilateral proximal fibula and autograft or allograft reconstruction. This case report describes treatment of distal fibula grade 3 GCT with involvement of syndesmosis with tumour excision, proximal fibular slide and reconstruction of ankle joint. With this technique the an...

Authors: Black ND, Malhas L, Jin R, Bhatia A, Chan VWS, Chin KJ Abstract Background: Iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) harvesting is associated with significant perioperative pain and opioid consumption. Retrospective studies indicate the transversalis fascia plane (TFP) block can provide analgesia for anterior ICBG harvesting. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to establish the efficacy of the TFP block in this setting. Methods: Fifty patients undergoing wrist fusion surgery with anterior ICBG harvesting were randomized to receive a TFP block with either 20 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine or 5% dextrose. Patients a...

The majority of bone implants, cements, and grafts are hard objects that don’t always work well in filling the space they’re supposed to inhabit. Soft objects can gently expand and relocate their mass evenly over a volume, and they tent t...

Authors: Asari Y, Kageyama K, Sugiyama A, Kogawa H, Niioka K, Daimon M Abstract Cushing's disease is almost always caused by hypersecretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from a pituitary adenoma. A mutation in the deubiquitinase gene USP8 has been found in human ACTH-producing pituitary adenoma cells. This mutational hotspot hyperactivates USP8, rescuing epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) from lysosomal degradation and ensuring its sustained signaling in Cushing's disease. An EGFR inhibitor would be an effective anti-tumor agent in EGFR-related tumors. We investigated the effect of a potent dual tyrosi...

In this study, an expression of ERp29 was examined in patient-derived osteosarcoma cells (7 cases) and normal bone graft-derived osteoblasts (7 cases) using western blotting. Expression profile of ERp29 in 94 osteosarcoma cases was investigated using immunohistochemically stained on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsied tissue. An association with clinicopathologic parameters and the patient survival was evaluated. Results: The results substantiate the outcome from the proteomic study in which ERp29 expression was significantly higher in primary osteosarcoma cells compared to osteoblastic cells. Immunohistochemical anal...
