Cessation Intervention for Low-Income Smokers

For economically disadvantaged smokers, supplementing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and text messaging support with telephone counseling improved smoking cessation rates, according to astudy inJAMA Internal Medicine. In this trial, 624 smokers were randomly assigned to three 12-week interventions: NRT; NRT plus text messages offering support, coping skills, and motivation; and NRT, text messages, and telephone counseling.
